For the first time in Australia, a firearms and explosives detection dog (FEDD) will be used to patrol the rail network in the state of Queensland.
The move is an anti-terrorist initiative by the state in the light of recent bombings in Indonesia and the anti-terrorist raids in Victoria.
The three-year-old trained Labrador dog will work on the state's rail network to detect explosive material, firearms and reported suspicious items.
The FEDD team will work with other railway squad members to enhance safety across the urban rail network.
Initially, the state will focus on busy stations such as the Brisbane CBD. Extending the patrolling to the entire network is under planning.
Transport Minister Rachel Nolan said the aim is to work with police to increase passengers' safety and their sense of security while using the public transport system.
