Birmingham Station to Undergo £600m Overhaul

13 August 2009

Work is set to start shortly on the £600m major overhaul to transform Birmingham railway station in the UK into a modern transport hub.

During the first phase, operator Network Rail will build a new concourse to be opened to the public in 2012, over what is now a lower-level car park.

The New Street Gateway project will transform the concourse during the second phase, increasing the size by three-and-a-half times to double the passenger capacity.

The project is expected to generate over £2bn in transport and wider economic benefits to the city.

The project is being funded by Network Rail, Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands and Centro and is being implemented by Network Rail.
