Sri Lanka to Construct 26 New Rail Stations

12 August 2009

Sri Lanka's ongoing Rs2bn 'Uthuru Mithuru' rail project to reinstate the 159km Yal Devi track has succeeded in gaining funds for 26 new stations.

Construction of the stations will cost nearly Rs400m and will be sponsored by the government and private organisations.

Work on Omanthai railway station has already begun with funds from Social Services, the Social Welfare Ministry and the Swarnavahini Organization.

The country adopted a first-come-first-serve policy to allocate sponsorship to interested companies.

The track has been non-operational for 20 years after it was damaged during a war in the country.
