South Africa to Invest in Rail Service

10 August 2009

South Africa will invest R25bn to upgrade its passenger rail service across the country.

Out of the total budget, R14bn will be used on improving infrastructure and rolling stock, while the remainder will be used for operations.

In addition, the railway hopes to get approval for a further R80bn for rolling stock to add 6,800 coaches to its metro rail service.

South Africa says that in the wake of increasing passenger traffic, it requires over 550 new coaches every year for the next ten to 13 years.
