Delayed Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Rail Line to Open in 2012, say Officials

05 August 2009

The ongoing Baku-Tbilisi-Kars rail line project to connect Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan will be complete by 2012, according to officials.

The project, previously scheduled to be complete in 2010, has been delayed due to technical problems and the war between Georgia and Russia in 2008.

The line will link the Azerbaijani capital Baku, the Georgian capital Tbilisi and the Turkish city of Kars, and will cost an estimated $600m.

Turkey and Azerbaijan are funding their own routes while Georgia has taken a $200m loan from Azerbaijan to build its 29km line.

The Turkish stretch is 76km long.

The construction work for the project began in November 2007.
