Tasmanian Rail Network Completes First Renovation Phase

The Tasmanian rail network has completed the $38m first phase of its ongoing renovation programme, funded by the Australian Government under the rail rescue package.

The work involved replacing 157,000 sleepers and 25km of rail, and installing 621,000 posts and clips, 1,900 welds to join the rails and 35,000t of ballast in the south of the state.

The work also includes a $4.9m programme of renovations at 67 level crossings, which is expected to be complete by the end of September 2009.

The work has been carried out by Queensland Rail and Tasmanian-based VEC Civil Engineering.

The renovation work is expected to be complete by November 2009.
