Ladakh Rail Project Moves Ahead

03 August 2009

The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir's second rail project has moved ahead with survey work starting on the Ladakh rail line, following the project's sanction by the government.

The line, which is to be the first rail network in Ladakh, will connect the Leh region with Bilaspur in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

The 498km-long rail line will be built at an estimated cost of Rs22,000 crore.

Six passenger trains and nine goods trains are planned to run on the broad-gauge rail line.

The service is expected to cater to around 6,000 passengers.
