India Ready to Inaugurate Kolkata's Garia Metro

31 July 2009

The Indian city of Kolkata is set to inaugurate the 6km metro stretch between Tollygunge and Garia in August 2009, following railway safety clearance.

The stretch begins at Tollygunge and stops 2.5km short of New Garia station. It will allow passengers to travel from Tollygunge to Garia in 15 minutes.

The route is part of the planned 8.5km metro line, which will eventually be extended to Briji.

The project, worth Rs1,032 crore, began in 1999 and is expected to be complete by 2010. The state is funding 33% of the project.
