The Hawaiian city of Honolulu's rail transit project has been given the go-ahead for work on its second phase, preliminary engineering by the US Federal Transit Administration (FTA).
The FTA gave its approval as the project's contractor Jacobs Engineering Group reported the project's schedule and budget to be enough for the next phase to start.
The project, to build a 20-mile network in the city, is expected to be complete in 2019 with Jacobs Group projecting the cost at $5.28bn.
The federal government is expected to spend $1.2bn on the project.
