US railroad operator Norfolk Southern has announced a $129m plan to build an intermodal terminal in Rossville to serve the Memphis region.
The terminal will be part of the multistate Crescent Corridor project to enhance Norfolk Southern's 2,500-mile freight rail network covering the Gulf Coast, Birmingham and Memphis to Philadelphia and the New York metropolitan area.
Once complete, the project is expected to remove more than one million truckloads of freight from the roads and move it onto rail.
Norfolk Southern CEO Wick Moorman said that because of its strategic location and growing intermodal demands in the south, the Memphis regional terminal will be an anchor for the Crescent Corridor.
The intermodal facility will have the capacity to handle more than 327,000 containers and trailers annually and be served by four trains daily.
The terminal will also utilise the latest in gate and terminal automation technology to reduce waiting time, thereby curbing emissions.
The 570-acre location will also allow for adjacent economic development opportunities including possible logistics and industrial parks.
The terminal is expected to open in January 2012.
