Canada has announced a CAN$300m ($267.8m) plan to upgrade the 539km rail line between the cities of Toronto and Montreal.
Under the two-year project, new tracks will be added to eight locations and existing yard tracks will be extended.
The track renovation will allow the smoother passage of trains run by rail operators Via Rail and Canadian National Railway and decrease the conflict in schedules between the two operators' freight trains.
The renovation will also allow two additional round-trip trains from Toronto to Montreal and Toronto to Ottawa. The travel time between Toronto and Montreal will reduce by 30 minutes.
The government hopes the project will boost passenger numbers by 40% over the next five years.
Work is expected to begin shortly.
