Amtrak Renovates First Car Using Federal Grant

15 July 2009

US rail operator Amtrak has renovated a damaged passenger car using $687,000 of federal grant money.

This is the first car out of a total of 81 cars and 15 diesel locomotives that the agency will refurbish under the $450m federal stimulus grant.

The passenger car number 25103, which got damaged a few years ago in a yard collision, will now run with a refurbished interior and increased capacity on the Toronto-Miami long-distance route by next week.

The $450m amount to refurbish cars is part of Amtrak's share of $1.3bn out of the government's $8bn federal stimulus money for rail improvements.
