Italy Metro Installs Reicom's Novel Cyclope Technology

15 July 2009

Metro trains in the Italian city of Milan are to be equipped with Reicom's novel Cyclope technology, which enables drivers to see CCTV footage up to 300m away.

The technology will help drivers see CCTV images of the next station's platforms on an in-cab screen.

The information will be used to identify potentially problematic locations such as level crossings, tunnels or areas vulnerable to landslides.

The Cyclope technology sends images directly from the cameras to any trains in the area, rather than being relayed through a central point.

Data can be transmitted for up to 2.6km, depending on the local topography, although this can be extended with lineside repeaters.

The technology can also be used for passenger information, text and graphics to trains, as well as on-train internet access and telephone use.

The trains will be provided by Italy's Firema and AnsaldoBreda.
