UK to Get 16 Flexity 2 Trams

10 July 2009

UK Railways has awarded Canadian company Bombardier Transportation a $54m contract to supply 16 Flexity 2 trams to the city of Blackpool.

The new trams are 32.5m long and 2.65m wide, and feature five sections and three bogies.

The vehicles incorporate Bombardier's MITRAC propulsion technology and an optimised air-conditioning system that will help modernise the UK's traditional tram service as well as reduce energy consumption, the company says.

The order is funded by the Department for Transport, Blackpool Council and Lancashire County Council.

Delivery of vehicles is scheduled for between May 2011 and March 2012.
