China has inaugurated the 14.2km-long Shanghai Metro Line 8 Phase II, connecting Pudong New Area to Minhang District in the city.
The line covers nine new stations between Pudong's Chengshan Road Station and Minhang's Shanghai Airspace Science Park Station.
The new route will cut down travel time between Pujiang Town and Pudong's People's Square to 36 minutes, benefiting thousands of residents who have been relocated from the Shanghai World Expo site to Pujiang Town.
Phase II is an extension of the 22.4km-long metro Line 8 which connects Yangpu District to Pudong. With its completion, the total metro network in the city will increase to 250km, nearing its target of 400km by May 2010 when the Shanghai World Expo begins.
