Michigan Plans to Cut Amtrak Subsidies

08 July 2009

The US state of Michigan is planning to cut subsidies to rail operator Amtrak for two of its three lines running in the state.

The yearly $7.3m funding for the Pere Marquette and Blue Water lines may be cut to $3.7m a year.

The third line, the Wolverine, is not state subsidised and would not be affected by the cuts.

The final decision, however, will wait on the announcement of the state budget for the fiscal year starting from October 2009. The budget will also state the effect of the cuts on Amtrak's services.
