Italy Rail Fire Claims Lives

02 July 2009

At least 15 people have been killed and another 34 injured in a massive fire in northern Italy after two gas-filled rail tankers derailed and exploded on 30 June 2009.

A wagon in a 14-carriage train on its way to Pisa, transporting liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), came off the rails and exploded in the seaside resort of Viareggio just before midnight.

The fire engulfed many nearby homes.

The government has declared an emergency in the region and will set up a committee to investigate the incident.

The accident has been cited as the most serious in Italy since 2005, when a cargo train and a passenger train collided killing 17 people.
