US BNSF Railway has developed two online tools to allow shippers and carriers to easily access information about where intermodal services can be used and the exact costs.
The first tool, Intermodal Transit Advisor, provides information on available routes, cutoff, availability time, transit time and distance between destinations.
Another tool, Savings Estimator, helps shippers know the money they can save by preferring BNSF intermodal to highway shipping.
BNSF group vice-president Steve Branscum said that last year, BNSF customers achieved significant savings by converting highway freight to BNSF intermodal and experienced transit that is as fast and reliable as highway service.
"BNSF's internet tools are now open to all shippers and carriers so they can see for themselves the benefits of intermodal shipping," Branscum said.
