US state Kentucky's RJ Corman Railroad Group has acquired Canadian Gen-Set locomotives maker Railpower Technologies and its wholly owned US subsidiary Railpower Hybrid Technologies.
This association will result in Gen-Set locomotives being designed and built by a company that also operates railroads.
Gen-Set locomotives are built using multiple smaller engines as compared to conventional new locomotives that use one large engine.
The result is a better matching of engine power needs to the required amount of power to move the train, resulting in up to a 40% fuel savings and greenhouse gases, and up to an 80% reduction in nitrogen oxide.
