Nine people have been confirmed dead in a collision between two subway trains in Washington DC.
A moving train crashed into the back of a stationary train above ground between Fort Totten and Takoma Park at 17.00 hours local time (22.00 BST).
The collision occurred as the train approached a station waiting for a train ahead to be cleared during rush hour on a busy section of the commuter line headed in the direction of Washington.
76 people were treated at the scene and six of those were sent to hospital with critical injuries.
Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty described the crash as "the deadliest accident in the history of our Metro train transit system".
"We have to at this time continue to act and behave as a rescue scene," Fenty said.
It has been reported by BBC news America that the carriages were 70 to 80% compressed. Rescuers are on the scene and it is not clear if more bodies are yet to be found.
