Union Pacific (UP) Railroad in the US will invest more than $9m to renovate the Altoona-to-Humbird, Wisconsin track to run trains efficiently, and reduce the waiting time of motorists at crossings and traffic congestion on US highways.
Once the project is complete the crews will have removed and installed more than 25,000 ties, spread 15,600t of rock ballast for a stable roadbed, upgraded the rail, renewed the road surfaces at 50 crossings, and replaced 12 switches and the machines that guide a train from one track to another.
UP is planning to invest $1.7m during 2009 to improve the track infrastructure across its more than 32,000-mile system.
The project was started on 13 June 2009 and is expected to be complete by the end of October.
