UP to Get Sixth Genset Locomotive

15 June 2009

The Union Pacific (UP) Railroad will add the sixth next generation, ultra-low emitting Genset switching locomotive to its fleet in July at Roseville, California bringing the existing fleet to 165.

The new Genset switcher will employ six traction motors for increased power over the previous Gensets, which are operated on four traction motors.

The new version meets all the environmental standards and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 37%, emissions of the oxides of nitrogen by up to 80% and particulate matter by 90% compared to older locomotives.

The locomotives will use up to 37% less fuel and emissions are 50% better than current US Environmental Protection Agency regulatory limits for new locomotives.
