New York Rail Company Trials New Explosive Testing Device

11 June 2009

A passenger service from New York to New Jersey will trial a new security system that can detect explosives hidden under clothing by sensing energy on the human body.

The US Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) rail system says the trial of the Passive Millimeter Wave system will last for a month.

The camera-like gadget flashes an image for operators and an indicator produces a strength bar from green to red that shows the presence or absence of anomalies that could lead to security implications.

The technology has been used by the Transport Security Administration in the past, which has tested it on US ferry services.

All passengers will be subject to the test from the time they step in the station, according to the port authority, until 10 July 2009.
