Work Begins on Trans-Hudson Tunnel

The construction of $8.7bn trans-Hudson tunnel project linking northern New Jersey and Manhattan in the US has begun.

This third tunnel under the Hudson River is the nation's largest Federal Transit Administration funded project and will double commuter rail capacity between New Jersey and New York City.

The US government will fund $3bn towards the total amount of the project.

The project is expected to be complete in 2017.
