Union Pacific (UP) Railroad in the US is spending about $25m on two projects to upgrade lines in Texas and Idaho as part of $1.7b Class I capital spending budget in 2009.
The $13m first project to improve track between Roanoke and Tower 55 in Fort Worth, Texas includes removing and installing more than 45,000 ties, spreading 100,000t of ballast and renewing road surfaces at 38 grade crossings.
For the second project, $12m is being spent on installing more than 66,000 ties on 35 miles of double track and renewing road surfaces at 55 crossings between Pocatello and Nampa, Idaho.
The first project is expected to be complete in July 2009 and the second is expected to be complete in the second week of June.
In 2007–08, UP spent more than $400m on capital projects in Texas and more than $34m in Idaho.
