The Gold Coast light rail project connecting Helensvale through the suburbs or via Harbour Town to Broadbeach in Queensland, Australia will start by 2011 thanks to new government funding.
Stage I and II of the project are estimated to cost A$850m and have already received A$365m in federal funding. Sources for the remaining finance have to be identified by Queensland state and the local government.
The Gold Coast city council has already allocated A$150m as a part of its contribution and the state will also contribute for the remaining amount.
The cost of Stage I will be determined depending on the final route selection.
The first section of the light rail line will run from Helensvale to Griffith University, either through the suburbs or via Harbour Town and second stage would link the university to Southport, the third would continue to Broadbeach.
The project will become operational in late 2013.
