Swiss Rail Freight gets Federal Boost

05 June 2009

The federal government of Switzerland will provide $US46m (CHF50m) as a support package for rail freight operators hit by the decline in volumes due to global economic recession.

The government's policy aims to increase rail's modal share of the freight market and retain the competitiveness with road transport even at the time of cutdown in prices by road contractors to attract the business.

The additional funding will be available to 19 selected state-owned and private freight operators, including SBB Cargo.
