EU Funds Bulgarian Railways

02 June 2009

Bulgaria's state-run National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC) has signed two financing contracts with the EU worth €39.7m (77.76m levs).

The first contract, worth €35.7m (69.99m levs), is to construct a 17km-long section between Svilengrad (south-east Bulgaria) and the Turkish border, part of Corridor X.

This project will be started by Czech company OHL by May 2011. OHL was selected out of three bidders.

The second contract worth €3.95m (7.76m levs) will create a geographical information system to integrate all the data related to the Bulgarian railway infrastructure.

The EU will fund 85% of the second contract amount for the development of the project with the rest to be allocated by the Bulgarian government.

The EuroGeoRail consortium consisting of six Bulgarian registered companies will create the information system by November 2010.
