Ansaldo to Extend North Shore Light Rail Connector

26 May 2009

Ansaldo STS USA has signed a $13m subcontract agreement with Wellington Power to extend 1.2 miles of the North Shore Connector project's light rail system.

Port Authority of Allegheny County's (PAAC) North Shore Connector links the downtown area of Pittsburgh with the city's North Shore via an underground tunnel beneath the Allegheny River.

The contract includes the design and implementation of an interlocking system and wayside signal system for the new relay rooms at Allegheny Station and North Side Station, and modifications in the Gateway Station and the Wood Street Station interlocking relay rooms.

The company will design modifications for the existing Authority Operations Control Centre (OCC) to support the added facilities and equipment. Ansaldo was involved initially in the development and operation of the OCC contract.

Additionally, it will deliver a communications subsystem that includes fibre optic transmission, variable message signage, digital video surveillance and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).
