The British infrastructure manager Network Rail has proposed to electrify 4.827km of track including the Midland Main Line (London–Sheffield) and the Great Western Main Line (London–Bristol) to reduce rail traffic.
According to Network Rail, electric trains are faster, quieter, more environmentally friendly, operate at lower cost and haul a higher number of wagons.
The company has planned to develop a technique for installing electric lines rapidly and efficiently, without interrupting the services and with accessible costs.
However, the company is looking for funds to implement this project.
After presenting this project, Network Rail launched an official consultation procedure with industrial partners. This procedure will last 60 days. Afterwards, the project will be finalised and submitted to the Railway Regulation Office.
