GE Transportation will supply 25 new C25 EMPD six-axle series locomotives to Nigerian Railways, as per a new agreement signed with the government.
The new six-axle model featuring the 7FDL 12-cylinder will be built by GE Transportation's affiliate facility in Contagem, Brazil and the 2,500 horsepower engine will be supplied by a manufacturing plant in Grove City, Pennsylvania, US.
Nigerian Minister of Transport Alhaji Ibrahim Bio said that the delivery of these new locomotives is key to continued railroad infrastructure development and economic growth.
"The President and Federal Government of Nigeria are determined to revive the comatose railway system into a critical enabling engine of the economy," he said. "We hope that our partnership with GE in implementing this programme will serve as a model to the railway industry in the entire African continent."
The locomotives which will be used for freight and passenger transport will be delivered by 2010.
