Bulgarian Capital Launches Underground Extension Line

11 May 2009

The Bulgarian capital Sofia officially opened the extension of its first metro line, connecting the residential district of Mladost 1 and the main building of Sofia University, on 8 May 2009.

The 6km-long line, built and operated by The Metropolitan company, will initially have only four trains every seven minutes covering the distance in ten minutes. The line has five subway stations.

The final part of the metro line between Serdica station and Sofia University will be completed by the end of September 2009.

Sofia aims to open 13 underground stations by 2012 and two more underground lines by 2014.
