US Plans $1.83bn New Transport Options Programme

11 May 2009

US President Barack Obama has recommended a funding programme of $1.83bn for major transit projects to create new transport options.

The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has recommended a $604.3m investment in ten new or expanding transit projects – including five major capital construction projects under the New Starts Program and five smaller transit projects under the Small Starts Program.

The areas covered are Northern New Jersey of Austin, Texas and Roaring Fork Valley of Colorado.

US Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said, "By reinvesting in our nation's transit infrastructure, we are making our communities more liveable, invigorating the local economy and putting America back to work."

The programme also funds 29 projects approved earlier. 11 of these projects recently received an additional investment of $742.5m under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds.
