Singapore's Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded a contract to a consortium to provide 22 six-car trains for the North-South/East-West Lines (NSEWL) in the country.
The contract amounts to an approximate value of S$368m.
The consortium, consisting of Kawasaki Heavy Industries and CSR Qingdao Sifang Locomotive and Rolling Stock, will design, supply, test, commission and install 22 trains on track.
The trains will be delivered in phases to Singapore between 2011 and 2012.
The LTA will also take up the Jurong East Modification Project (JEMP) to improve the railway infrastructure by adding new train track and platform at Jurong East Station, for which 22 trains will be installed.
The improved infrastructure of Jurong East station and 22 new trains will reduce passengers' waiting times and make their journeys more comfortable during peak hours.
