VTA to Pave the Way for BART Extension

05 May 2009

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is to start a $36m Freight Railroad Relocation (FRR) project on 8 May in the South Bay area.

The first phase of the project begins with clearing of the existing Union Pacific Railroad track and utilities owned by VTA, then relocating to the parallel location within the eight-mile railroad from Fremont to Milpitas.

VTA general manager Michael T Burns said the project is an important part of a larger extension in the area called BART, which includes road crossings, bridges and flood control measures.

"Beginning these construction activities is an important milestone that clears the path for BART, while also making additional community improvements and safety enhancements for Milpitas residents," he said.
