Network Rail is to launch a study into building new high-speed rail lines in Britain to cope with increasing passenger demand.
Network Rail said the study will look at five of the company’s strategic routes to and from London.
According to Network Rail Chief Executive Iain Coucher most lines across the country will be "full up" by 2025, especially those running to and from the north and west of London.
"With popularity for rail growing, we have to start planning for the medium- and long-term future today.
"We have to see how we can meet the capacity challenge and see what solutions – including potentially, that of new lines – are deliverable and affordable," said Coucher.
Network Rail says passenger numbers have soared by 40% with 1.13 billion journeys a year in the last ten years.
Freight loads have also rocketed by 60% over the last decade.
