A $750m renovation programme to upgrade California's rail line aimed at reducing air pollution will start by the end of this year.
The port plans to create a 345-acre terminal and add 65,000ft of track over the next ten years.
When complete the two main terminals – Long Beach Container Terminal and California terminal – will be merged and the cargo capacity will be doubled.
The port aims to reduce air pollution by installing clean-air equipment at rail yards and use clean, low-sulphur fuelling options.
