Calls for Better Surveillance on Louisiana Rail

08 April 2009

High accident rates have led to calls for better surveillance of the rail system in the US state of Louisiana.

National Corridors Initiative president Jim RePass has urged Louisiana officials to install traffic cameras at major railroad crossings to prevent motorists from beating red lights.

According to RePass, Louisiana has the highest rate of railroad crossing accidents in the US.

He said that a similar exercise carried out in New Orleans’ roads has reduced the number of signal beaters and will also prove successful on railroad crossings.

The National Corridors Initiative is a not-for-profit organisation that works towards the development of the rail infrastructure.
