Hungary's state railway MAV Zrt is in talks to build two high-speed rail lines linking Budapest with Western Europe, MAV Chief Executive Officer Istvan Heinczinger has told reporters.
According to Hungary’s Vilaggazdasag newspaper, one line would begin in France and enter Hungary at Gyekenyes, while the other would start in Salzburg, Austria, and enter Hungary from Slovakia.
Trains would travel at speeds of 200km/h to 250km/h, the newspaper says.
Hungary would have to build new railway lines and infrastructure costing at least €2bn, Heinczinger says.
The country would use European Union development funds, probably from the spending cycle that begins in 2013, the newspaper says.
