Drinking Ban Sparks Mayhem on London Underground

02 June 2008

To mark the start of a drinking ban on London's public transport systems, thousands of partygoers descended on the Tube's Circle Line, leading to the arrest of 17 people and the closure of six underground stations.

Reports suggest the event was originally intended as a good natured celebration before the start of the ban at midnight on Saturday, however it became marred by acts of assault, vomiting and vandalism.

Instigated in part by event postings on social networking websites, the incident also forced several trains out of service and caused suspensions.

Euston, Euston Square, Notting Hill, Aldgate, Gloucester Road and Baker Street stations were all consequently closed as a result of the partying.
