Engineering company Thalys has launched Wi-Fi internet across its European fleet as part of a campaign to revamp its trains and meet customer demand for the technology.
Thalys is working with a consortium of Nokia Siemens Networks, Telenet and 21Net to install the technology by autumn 2008.
The groups will combine satellite and UMTS with Wi-Fi technologies to provide continuous internet connectivity, says Thalys.
The three complementary backhaul technologies will guarantee an optimal coverage in all countries, depending on the wireless technologies available along the trip.
Thalys says it will "transform" its European fleet over the coming months with the introduction of new staff uniforms, a revamp of train interior design and a reduction in high-speed train journey times between European destinations Paris to Amsterdam, Cologne and Brussels.
