China Gives Go Ahead to Shanghai and Nanjing Line

28 March 2008

China's National Development and Reform Commission has formally approved the construction of a 300km high-speed line between Shanghai and Nanjing.

The ¥39.5bn project is to be funded by the two cities, the province of Jiangsu and the Chinese Ministry of Railways.

The passenger line will cut the fastest journey time between the two cities from two hours to 72 minutes.

Construction is expected to start in the first half of this year and is scheduled for completion in 2012.
