Deutsche Bahn Assists UAE with Conceptual Rail Network Development

11 September 2008

Deutsche Bahn (DB) and the United Arab Emirates have signed a memorandum of understanding that will see DB assisting in the conceptual development of a rail network in the Emirates.

DB will develop conceptual designs and provide consultancy services for the establishment of a local transport system in Doha, and the development of international freight and passenger lines including a possible high-speed rail link to Bahrain.

The joint project is comprised of around 60 transport experts and engineers from DB International who will draw up several different planning options and track layouts in cooperation with the Qatari partner.

The agreement is for DB to provide expertise only and the company is not expected to make any financial contribution.

Chairman of DB International Dr Otto Wiesheu said that this agreement "clearly demonstrates the strength of our integrated group and the excellent reputation our railway know-how enjoys in other countries".

The results of the planning phase are due to be presented to the Emirates Government early next year.
