Siemens to Supply Radios on UK Rail Network

12 March 2008

Siemens Transportation Systems has won a contract from Bombardier to supply CSR and GSM-R radios on London's Overground rail network.

Under the contract, Siemens will supply the two systems on 44 trains, its first installation of GSM-R radios in the UK, the company announced at this year's Infrarail event in Birmingham, UK.

The GSM-R radios are being installed as a 'train ready' module and following trials in October this year, the trains will continue to run while upgrades are carried out to the onboard radio systems.

Siemens, which is working jointly with UK rail infrastructure provider Network Rail, will replace the existing NRN and CSR analogue radio systems, which it says will improve safety on the network.

Bombardier is currently building the trains for use by Transport for London on the London Overground network from late 2008.
