Suppliers Called on to Help Build UK Rail

11 March 2008

UK infrastructure company Network Rail has called on suppliers to show "competence and passion" to improve capacity on the country's passenger networks over the next ten years.

Speaking to delegates at Infrarail 2008, Group Infrastructure Director for Network Rail Peter Henderson says the company will be investing up to ВЈ20bn on big projects across the country including re-developing Reading Station, re-vamping Birmingham New Street and improvements to the Thameslink Corridor in London.

The UK boasts Europe's fastest growing passenger and freight network over the last ten years, with 43 percent growth in passengers and 60 percent in freight.

But the big projects can only be completed with more skill and innovation, according to Henderson.

"We need hundreds of additional skills to help improve capacity. The key message for suppliers is the need for competence and passion for innovation," he says.

But skills alone will not resolve problems in promoting growth, according to the Director General of the Rail Industry Association Jeremy Canfield, who wants to see improved relations each step of the way.

"There is still a lot to be done. We need changes in the relationships between suppliers and clients to improve cost effectiveness."
