Tube Firm to Cut CO2 Emissions

05 March 2008

London Underground maintenance company Tube Lines has vowed to cut its CO2 emissions by 5,000t by the end of the year, following a study into its carbon footprint.

The two-year study, commissioned by climate change and energy consultancy firm AEA and the UK's Carbon Trust, identifies many potential improvements, such as a more efficient driving programme for its road fleet and re-profiling train wheels in depots instead of sending them away.

The study takes into account emissions under Tubes Lines' direct control as well as indirect emissions caused by closing down underground lines to carry out work.

Tube Lines environment adviser Shane McEntee says the company is taking action as part of a larger whole.

"On its own, Tube Lines is not a big carbon polluter but we are part of a wider London transport network which altogether generates 22% of the total London CO2 emissions so we have to play our part in reducing our carbon footprint."
