The UK's Network Rail has outlined plans to upgrade rail links through Lincoln in order to create a route parallel to the East Coast Main Line (ECML) for use during engineering works and other disruptions.
As part of the company's new Route Utilisation Strategy for the ECML and northeast rail routes, the enhancements are designed to accommodate growing passenger numbers and minimise disruptions.
Network Rail also proposes increasing the number of long-distance trains from London's King's Cross station to eight trains per hour at peak times, and six per hour at other times.
The strategy also sets out plans for major upgrades to other diversionary routes, including the Hertford Loop and Peterborough to Doncaster via Lincoln, and increased capacity at King's Cross as part of the area's redevelopment.
