Network Rail Faces Tougher Controls

11 February 2008

Struggling UK rail operator Network Rail could face tighter controls when the Office of Rail Regulation (ORR) unveils its proposals this week.

The plans include cutting senior executive bonuses and a stricter regime for the management of major projects, writes the UK's Daily Telegraph.

If Network Rail fails to meet the conditions of its operating license, bonuses may be cut.

Network Rail has promised to cut the number of engineering contract staff in a bid to maintain more control over projects after major disruption was caused by work at Rugby and Liverpool Street station in London.

Last summer, the ORR revealed there were more than 1,000 track, signal and points breakdowns every week, despite the ВЈ6bn investment in the country's rail system over the previous 12 months.

Network Rail has also been threatened with fines by ORR.
