Floods Disrupt UK Rail Networks

22 January 2008

Rail lines were disrupted by flooding yesterday after heavy rainfall across the UK caused rivers to burst their banks, say transport officials.

The main west coast rail line connecting Scotland and England was cut between Preston and Lancaster, along with other routes across the north of England.

Rail operator Northern Rail announced no trains were operating from the city of Leeds to York, Manchester and Blackpool.

The UK's Met Office issued severe weather warnings for northern England and Northern Ireland, which experienced 25mm to 50mm of rainfall.

The Environment Agency says it remains on alert following Met Office forecasts and continues to clear watercourses, strengthen defences and pump out water where necessary.

The Met Office has also forecast heavy snow across parts of northern England and southern Scotland, which is likely to affect rail and road networks across the country.
