Mobile Phone Oyster Trialled in London

29 November 2007

London rail and tube operator Transport for London (TfL) has joined forces with UK-based mobile phone company O2 to trial a new handset which enables commuters to pay for travel across the city.

The new trial involves combining Oyster travel cards - which use contactless technology - with mobile phones using 02 "wallet phones" which can be used to top-up Oyster cards.

Commuters trialling the technology have been given a Nokia 6131 mobile phone handset installed with an "O2 Wallet" which enables them to test a wide range of services in London, including making purchases in retail outlets, says TfL.

TfL says the pilot scheme "will now determine how customers feel about having Oyster technology embedded in their phone".

TfL will look at ease of use and security when evaluating the trials.

More than ten million Oyster cards have been issued since their launch four years ago.

Earlier this year, British credit card company Barclaycard launched the OnePulse credit card with an in-built Oyster card.
